With its proximity to the Himalayas, the Ganga and the Yamuna rivers, and the holy centres of Hinduism such as Rishikesh and Haridwar, Dehra Dun is a favourite destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. The moderate climate, the usually peaceful political situation, and its serene natural beauty draw many to settle in this city. Dehra Dun is the home of many nationally and internationally known institutions and organizations such as the Forest Research Institute, Indian Military Academy, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Indian Institute of Petroleum, Survey of India, etc. The region is most well-known for educational institutions such as Doon School, Welhams, Woodstock, and a number of other elite schools. Several Christian organizations also have their headquarters in Dehra Dun.
